Anatomy and physiology are intrinsically linked – anatomy considers the form, physiology the function. Musicians ultimately need to develop the ability to listen to and consciously interpret signals from their own bodies – at their instruments and away from them. Used consistently, simple movement routines develop “body literacy” and help us make informed choices.
Musicians relate to their instruments in habitual ways. Making one small change or developing one new awareness impacts the entire relationship. Although frightening, this new relationship has the potential to transform playing.
